Dea Wallace,
copies sent to Accts. o .D.22
20th May, 1948.
Please refer to your letter of 7th May about the proposed salary for the Principal Matron at Hong Kong. I note that a re-examination of the question has left you unconvinced of the advisability of reducing the proposed salary. If, as appears to be the case, you are satisfied that (a) the difference of £135 per annum between the emoluments of a Principal Mat ron and a Matron Grade I is reasonable; (b) the additional responsibilities of the post justify its carrying a substantially higher salary than that in mind for comparable officers in U.K.; and (c) no difficulties will arise on this last point, due regard being paid to the reciprocal State Registration for Nurses existing between Hong Kong and England and Wales, then we should not wish to press our objection any further.
Yours sincerely,
W.I.J. Wallace, Esq.,
Colonial Office.
